Description

The variety of ecoregions in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern forms the background to effectively investigate the adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change as well as human adaptation efforts. The working groups that form the research cluster investigate the susceptibility of woodland sites to climate extremes (Glatzel/Lennartz), the response of important forest tree species in semi-natural forests to climate change (Manthey/Wilmking), and the ecological potential of the anthropogenic forests with regard to the restoration of multifunctional near-natural forests (Zerbe).

The three sub-projects focus on the threshold effects of climate extremes on our main forest ecosystems along the climate gradient (maritime-continental) in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, NE Germany. All adaptation scenarios are based on a 50-100 year horizon employing a regional climate model that provides an important link for all sub- projects. The participating working groups carry out their investigations with state-of-the-art field methods, retrospective analyses, new analysis of existing databases as well as GIS and modelling. The gained results will be linked beyond the purely scientific layer, providing strategies for policy makers and stakeholders in order to provide a basis for responsible action facing climate change and forest adaptation in the Southern Baltic Sea region.
